A new year has arrived. One of my (many) goals is to be more serious about film as a step towards making it more than just a hobby. To that end, I plan on documenting the films I watch this year. Enjoy.
#18 - Me and Orson Welles (2009)
Director: Richard Linklater
Confession: I saw this movie because I was craving breadsticks. The Bear Tooth Theatrepub is the best theatre in Anchorage. You can’t beat the combination of $3 movies and delicious food. After a long day at work I decided to go over to Bear Tooth and get some breadsticks. I arrived just as Me and Orson Welles was starting and figured I might as well check it out.
Another confession: I have a soft spot for High School Musical. I’m a Disney fanatic and I love musicals. There was really no way for me to avoid it. Those three films plus 17 Again resulted in me being intrigued by Zac Efron. The prospect of seeing him in non-tween film was enough to get me to cough up the $3.
I really didn’t enjoy this movie. A few of the characters interested me, primarily Sonja and Orson himself, but the story left much to be desired. I enjoyed the depiction of New York theatre in the 1930s, but the story never really intrigued me.
I don’t know much about Orson Welles. It may be the case that this cartoonish-seeming depiction of him is accurate. But much of it seemed silly. Since I never invested in the characters or the story, I was left without any noticeable emotional or intellectual impact. I don’t really recommend this film to anyone. It wasn’t terrible, it just didn’t really matter.
